Vijayawada, India — A catastrophic explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in Rayavaram left seven workers dead and three others injured on Wednesday. The incident occurred at Sri Ganapathi Grand Fire Works, owned by V. Satyanarayana Murthy, where 12 employees were present when the blast took place shortly after noon.
The impact of the explosion was devastating; six workers and the owner tragically lost their lives instantly. Those who survived were quickly transported to a hospital in Kakinada, where one female worker, identified as V. Vijaya Lakshmi, later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment. The deceased include five others, with one individual’s identity still pending confirmation.
Reports suggest the incident transpired while workers were handling a mixture of chemicals in preparation for filling empty flowerpots. A spark ignited the volatile materials, triggering the explosion and sending shockwaves through the area. Emergency services revealed that the force of the blast was powerful enough to cause immediate fatalities among those gathered nearby.
Authorities conducted a prior inspection of the unit, confirming it held a valid license for manufacturing, storing, and selling fireworks since May 2020. Both police and fire department officials stated that they deemed the establishment compliant with safety regulations during their most recent assessments on September 25 and earlier this month. However, district collector Mahesh Kumar shared that an injured worker reported an issue with an electrical wire shortly before the explosion, suggesting a malfunction may have contributed to the disaster.
In the wake of the tragedy, Home Minister V. Anitha visited the explosion site and extended her condolences to the affected families. She indicated that an ex gratia payment would be announced to assist those impacted. Anitha attributed the explosion to a possible short circuit in the electrical system.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the fatalities in Konaseema district, and he wished a swift recovery for the injured. The news of the incident has also drawn attention from local leaders, including Governor S. Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who have pledged to provide necessary relief and medical support.
