NORTH CODORUS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A tragic ambush left three police officers dead and two others injured in an unprecedented attack on law enforcement responding to a domestic violence situation in York County. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth, was killed during an exchange of gunfire with authorities.
The incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon at a farmhouse on Haar Road, where five officers attempted to serve a warrant in connection with Ruth allegedly stalking an ex-girlfriend. The three fallen officers, Det. Sgt. Cody Becker, Det. Isaiah Emenheiser, and Det. Mark Baker, all belonged to the Northern York County Regional Police Department. A fourth officer from the same department sustained injuries, along with a York County sheriff’s deputy.
According to law enforcement officials, the chain of events began the previous evening when a woman living at the farmhouse alerted the police about a man, later revealed to be Ruth, seen peering into her home with binoculars. Alarmed by sightings of a suspicious individual, the woman and her daughter had installed a trail camera after concerns were raised about potential arson targeting the daughter’s vehicle. The camera captured Ruth dressed in camouflage, further escalating worries about his intentions.
Emboldened by the threats, officers attempted to locate Ruth but could not find him at that time. In light of the stalking allegations, they sought an arrest warrant for charges including stalking, loitering, and criminal trespass.
The following day, as law enforcement returned to the property to act on the warrant, Ruth opened fire immediately upon their arrival, brandishing an AR-15-style rifle. In a harrowing exchange, he continued shooting at the officers, who were trying to apprehend him. The confrontation resulted in Ruth being fatally wounded when he approached the roadway.
After the incident, investigators made a grim discovery in the farmhouse: the family dog had been shot and killed in the basement. Officials suggested that had the ex-girlfriend and her mother arrived instead of the police, the outcome could have been far worse.
