Philadelphia, Pa. — A tragic arson fire claimed the lives of a pregnant woman and her two young children in a neighborhood known for its challenges. The incident, which occurred on June 13, has led to the arrest of two individuals facing multiple charges, including murder.
Police say 31-year-old Ashley Thompson and her children, 6-year-old Assad Thompson and 4-year-old Alaya Thompson-Newell, were victims of a fire that erupted in their rowhouse around 5 a.m. Firefighters discovered Thompson deceased on the second floor, while her children succumbed to their injuries later in the hospital.
Authorities have charged 67-year-old Charles Sumpter and 44-year-old Fleitte Newell in connection with the incident. Newell is reportedly the sister of a 54-year-old woman, identified as Sherry Jackson, who managed to escape the flames with a third child. Jackson had been involved in a year-long dispute with Newell regarding the residence where the fire occurred.
Preliminary investigations indicate that prior threats had been made by Newell towards Jackson, with allegations of intent to burn down the house. Jackson claims she had reported these threats to local authorities, but no action was taken at that time.
Following the arson, Sumpter and Newell were questioned by police but remained free until a warrant was issued for their arrest on June 25. Family members described Thompson, who was seven months pregnant at the time of her death, as a devoted mother and friend.
