Khan Younis, Gaza Strip — An explosion in a building in southern Gaza on Friday claimed the lives of four Israeli soldiers and left five others injured during a mission against the Hamas militant group. The incident is part of the ongoing military operations by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the region.
Among the deceased are Sergeant Major Chen Gross, 33, from the Maglan commando unit, and Staff Sergeant Yoav Raver, 19, from the Yahalom combat engineering unit. The IDF has stated that the identities of the remaining two soldiers who died will be disclosed later.
Initial investigations suggest that the soldiers entered the structure in Khan Younis, specifically in the suburb of Bani Suheila, to investigate potential terror threats. Unfortunately, the building was rigged with explosives, leading to a deadly blast that caused the structure to collapse on them. In addition to the fatalities, one of the wounded is reported to be in serious condition.
In a separate incident in Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighborhood, a reservist from the 646th Paratroopers Brigade sustained moderate injuries from a mortar explosion. He has been transported to a hospital, where his condition is stable, according to IDF sources.
Brigadier General Effie Defrin, an IDF spokesperson, acknowledged the risks involved in such operations. He emphasized that sometimes it is imperative to enter buildings to search for possible tunnels used by militants. “When we do so, we use a variety of methods in efforts to ensure our soldiers’ safety,” he stated during a press conference.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his sorrow over the loss of the soldiers, calling the day “sad and difficult.” In a statement, he paid tribute to the fallen, saying, “Our four fighters gave their lives for all of our security.” He also offered condolences to their grieving families, highlighting the collective pain felt across the nation.
The situation remains tense as the IDF continues its operations in the Gaza Strip, with both military and civilian casualties reported. The complexity of urban warfare in densely populated areas poses significant challenges for soldiers, making such operations perilous.
