ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A tragic shooting at the University of New Mexico resulted in the death of a 14-year-old on July 25, prompting a significant response from law enforcement and campus officials. The incident took place in the Gila Dormitory at the Casa del Rio Housing complex, as new students were arriving for orientation.
According to court documents from the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court, suspect John Fuentes arrived at the dormitory parking lot around 8 p.m. on July 24 in a vehicle belonging to his father. He met a fellow freshman before later encountering the 14-year-old and another individual, leading them toward the dormitory around 10:20 p.m. Witnesses indicated they were playing video games until a sudden and violent confrontation occurred.
Reports suggest Fuentes appeared impaired when he allegedly shot the younger victim in the head. After realizing what had taken place, a witness fled, along with another student, escaping through a window. Family members subsequently transported them to a local hospital for medical attention.
Authorities noted that gunfire was detected shortly after midnight on July 25 by the Albuquerque Police Department’s shot detection system. Following the shooting, Fuentes reportedly fled the scene, injuring himself after breaking windows on the first-story roof of the Mesa Vista building. Evidence collected from the area included blood samples and a stolen Glock 9mm handgun.
Security footage indicated that Fuentes left the campus and was later picked up by two individuals in a pickup truck around 1:40 a.m. Shortly thereafter, state police apprehended him on Highway 314 in Los Lunas. He now faces serious charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence.
