Vancouver, Canada — A woman visiting Vancouver earlier this month endured a severe assault while walking along the city’s popular Seawall, according to local authorities. The incident, which has since sparked widespread concern and debate over public safety, occurred in the vicinity of Stanley Park shortly after midnight on April 15.
The victim, who was on vacation, recounted the ordeal in a video she later posted online. She described how a man suddenly attacked her, throwing her to the ground and repeatedly assaulting her as she tried to flee. Despite her attempts to escape, the assailant caught up with her multiple times, leading to her having to physically defend herself on several occasions.
Sgt. Steve Addison of the Vancouver Police Department confirmed that the attack was particularly brutal and seemed to be an attempt on the woman’s life. More than 20 police officers responded to the emergency call and successfully apprehended a 34-year-old man in connection with the assault.
The suspect, who was already out on bail for a previous offense involving an assault on a peace officer and making threats in Surrey, was arrested two days before the attack on the tourist. Despite the severity of the new charges, which include assault causing bodily harm, the suspect was released by a B.C. court under several conditions, including house arrest and mandatory mental health intervention.
“The decision to release him was not taken lightly,” Sgt. Addison explained. “The court imposed strict conditions to mitigate the risk he poses. However, given the unprovoked and violent nature of the attack, we remain concerned about community safety and are currently evaluating further options.”
