Thrill Turns Tragic: Oklahoma Duo Charged with Murder After Sledding Accident Claims Young Woman’s Life

OKLAHOMA CITY — Tragedy struck this past weekend when sledding turned deadly, leading to murder and DUI charges against two individuals. The incident occurred late Sunday night, when 31-year-old Makayla Mitchell was riding a sled tethered to a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Angel Walzier.

According to police reports, while navigating a dimly lit road, the rope connecting Mitchell’s sled to Walzier’s car broke. Mitchell came to an abrupt halt in the middle of the road, leaving her vulnerable. Moments later, a vehicle driven by 24-year-old James Kirk, who was part of the sledding party and traveling behind them, collided with Mitchell.

The accident occurred on an unlit stretch of road, which significantly diminished visibility and likely contributed to the tragic circumstances. Emergency responders arrived shortly after the collision but pronounced Mitchell dead at the scene.

Authorities conducted blood tests on both Walzier and Kirk, revealing that they were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. As a result, both men were taken into custody and charged with murder and driving under the influence.

The family of Mitchell expressed their heartbreak over the incident, describing it as a “tragic mistake.” A friend of the family emphasized that the actions of those involved were not premeditated, noting, “It could have happened to anybody.”

This incident raises concerns about safety during recreational activities, especially in areas lacking proper lighting and oversight. Law enforcement officials encourage groups to exercise caution and remain vigilant while engaging in such activities, particularly at night.

The investigation into the tragedy is ongoing, as authorities continue to gather information and assess the circumstances surrounding Mitchell’s death. Community members are mourning a life lost far too soon, highlighting the unpredictable dangers that can accompany seemingly innocent pastimes.
