Investigators believe the shots came from across the road before the attacker possibly fled the Sunnyside scene on foot.
HOUSTON — Houston police are investigating whether a shooter fired from a grassy area across from a Sunnyside convenience store before fleeing on foot, leaving three women wounded and bullet damage inside the business.
The shooting in the 9100 block of Scott Street sent officers into the surrounding area Tuesday night to search for the person responsible. No suspect had been arrested, and police had not released a description or identified a possible motive by Wednesday morning.
Officers who were close to the store heard what investigators described as rapid gunfire and responded quickly, Houston police Lt. R. Willkens said. Police estimated that as many as 30 rounds may have been fired and said a rifle could have been used.
Investigators believe the gunfire originated in a grassy area across the street from the convenience store. Police searched the area but did not locate the shooter. Authorities said the person may have left on foot, though that remained part of the investigation.
The bullets traveled toward the store and its parking lot, where two women in their mid-30s were walking. Each woman was struck in an arm, police said. A woman in her 40s was wounded in a hand while sitting inside a vehicle.
The woman in the vehicle left the property after she was shot and was found farther down the road. All three victims were taken to a hospital. Police said their wounds were not expected to be life-threatening and did not release their identities.
At least one round entered the convenience store and struck a cooler, according to police. No injuries were reported inside the building, and authorities had not said how many bullets hit the business or other property near the scene.
The location of the suspected firing point and the number of shots were based on the early police investigation. Authorities had not announced whether shell casings or other evidence were recovered from the grassy area.
Police also had not said whether investigators obtained surveillance footage from the store or nearby properties. No information was released about a possible vehicle, and investigators had not indicated whether the shooter acted alone.
The investigation remained active Wednesday as detectives worked to determine who fired the shots, why the store and parking lot came under fire, and how the shooter left the area.
