Investigators say a stolen MacBook and vehicle-location data led them to two suspects days after the couple died in Kenya.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — A stolen laptop and tracking data from a luxury vehicle helped police locate property taken from the home of a South Florida couple who had died only days earlier in a helicopter crash in Kenya, authorities said.
Geybert Alexander Garcia, 40, and Melany Perdomo, 24, were arrested Tuesday and accused of burglarizing the Coral Gables home of Henry Parra, 55, and Adam Hlavaty, 42. Police said the burglary happened sometime from Aug. 20 through Aug. 22, shortly after Parra and Hlavaty were killed in the Aug. 19 crash in northern Kenya.
The couple’s housekeeper reported the burglary Aug. 23, according to arrest reports. Investigators said the residence on Valencia Avenue had been ransacked and numerous possessions were missing, including personal and business documents, jewelry, electronics and artwork. Police also said a 2023 Land Rover and a 2020 Porsche Taycan had been taken.
The investigation quickly turned to electronic tracking. Police said a location signal from the couple’s stolen Apple MacBook pointed detectives toward a residence in northwest Miami-Dade County. Location information connected to the stolen Land Rover also placed the vehicle at the same property, according to investigators.
After officers confirmed that the stolen vehicles were outside the residence, Coral Gables police and Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies executed a search warrant Tuesday. Investigators said Garcia tried to conceal himself in a bedroom closet while Perdomo was found in an upstairs bedroom.
Police said the search produced documents belonging to Parra and Hlavaty, a key fob for the Land Rover and several pieces of artwork. Among the recovered items was a sculpture that investigators said was valued at more than $500,000. Officers also reported finding equipment they described as consistent with producing or altering identification documents and personal identifying information.
Investigators also found a Ford F-250 at the property with what police described as an altered vehicle identification number. Authorities determined that truck had been reported stolen in Indian River County, according to the arrest report. Police have not publicly explained whether they believe that vehicle is connected to the burglary at Parra and Hlavaty’s home.
Garcia and Perdomo were booked on multiple felony charges, including burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, grand theft and grand theft of a vehicle. The accusations have not been proven in court. Authorities have not said in the arrest reports how the suspects allegedly learned that Parra and Hlavaty had died or whether investigators believe the home was specifically selected because of their deaths.
Parra and Hlavaty were among seven people killed when a Eurocopter EC130 B4 crashed Aug. 19 near Mount Ololokwe in Kenya’s Samburu County. The aircraft was flying from the Loisaba Conservancy toward the Ewaso Nyiro area when it went down at about 9:13 a.m., according to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. Five of those killed were U.S. citizens.
Hlavaty was a real estate executive and co-founder of the development company MRKT Group. Parra had served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation support technician and later spent nearly three decades helping operate an aviation maintenance company. The other victims included Miami restaurateur Roger Duarte, Telemundo executive José Suárez, Ecuadorian intelligence director Michele Sensi-Contugi, his wife, Stephany Hollihan, and pilot Josh Outram.
The cause of the Kenya crash remains under investigation. In Florida, Garcia and Perdomo remained in custody following court proceedings Wednesday as the burglary case moved forward.
