Texas man charged in Katy double killing tied to custody fight

Authorities say the 42-year-old suspect is the biological father of the couple’s 7-year-old adopted daughter.

HOUSTON, Texas — A 42-year-old man has been arrested and charged with capital murder in the Jan. 12 shootings of Trinette and Christopher Lopez at their home near Katy, investigators said Wednesday, adding that the case appears linked to a custody dispute involving the couple’s 7-year-old daughter.

Detectives with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said they obtained a capital murder warrant after identifying Norman Lee Johnson Jr. as the suspect in the early-morning attack at the Lopez family’s two-story house on the 3700 block of Bent Springs Lane. Johnson was taken into custody in Round Rock by members of the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Task Force and booked into the Williamson County Jail, where he is awaiting transfer to Harris County. The couple, both 52, were found shot to death downstairs while three other family members were asleep upstairs, officials said, underscoring the gravity of a case now moving toward Houston’s courts.

Deputies were dispatched shortly after 6 a.m. Jan. 12 after one of the Lopezes’ adult children called 911 and reported finding his parents unresponsive on the first floor, according to investigators. Trinette Lopez and Christopher Lopez were discovered in separate rooms and pronounced dead at the scene. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences later determined Christopher Lopez died from a penetrating gunshot wound to the face; Trinette Lopez suffered two gunshot wounds to the head and a perforating wound to the hand. “The motive likely stemmed from custodial issues,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said, noting detectives believe the suspect traveled from Central Texas to carry out the killings.

Officials said Johnson is the biological father of the couple’s 7-year-old adopted daughter. Family members told investigators the Lopezes, married for 28 years and described as high school sweethearts, had endured threats tied to the child’s custody. Court records show Johnson was charged with harassment in October 2024 after allegedly threatening to kill Christopher Lopez and another relative during a dispute over access to the girl. Investigators said there were no signs of forced entry the morning of the shootings, and no weapon was recovered from the scene. The couple’s adult son, adult daughter and the 7-year-old were upstairs at the time and were not physically hurt, authorities said.

Detectives said they believe Johnson drove from Round Rock to west Harris County before dawn on Jan. 12. Investigators are reviewing phone records, vehicle data and surveillance video from the neighborhood near Mason and Clay roads to reconstruct the hours before gunfire was reported around 5:43 a.m. Neighbors told deputies they awoke to sirens; some security cameras captured headlights entering and leaving the cul-de-sac. The sheriff’s office did not release details about any recovered shell casings or the caliber of the weapon, and officials said the precise sequence of shots remains under review.

Homicide investigators emphasized the case did not appear random. Family members told deputies Johnson had “protested for years” over custody and had sought contact that the Lopezes said needed to be handled through child protective services. Detectives are also examining previous law enforcement calls involving relatives outside Harris County that reportedly referenced confrontations with Johnson. Authorities did not report any protective orders in effect at the time of the killings, and investigators have not said how the shooter entered the home.

Prosecutors charged Johnson with capital murder, which under Texas law may be filed when more than one person is killed in the same incident. He was arrested Tuesday and remained jailed in Williamson County on Wednesday. A first court setting in Harris County is expected after his transfer; bond decisions will be made there. The sheriff’s office said additional charges are possible as evidence is processed and reviewed by the district attorney’s office. Detectives asked anyone with footage from the neighborhood early Jan. 12 to provide it to investigators.

On Bent Springs Lane, neighbors described a quiet street where families trade school pickups and dog-walking routes. A small arrangement of flowers sat near the Lopezes’ front walk this week. “They were always kind,” a neighbor said, recalling seeing the couple at the mailbox in the evenings. A relative said the family is caring for the 7-year-old and the adult siblings, who were home during the shooting, are helping with arrangements. The sheriff’s office said victim advocates are working with the family as the investigation continues.

Johnson remained in custody Wednesday night as authorities planned his transfer to Houston. Investigators said they expect to release more information after he is booked into the Harris County Jail and a probable cause hearing is scheduled. Evidence testing and additional interviews are ongoing as detectives prepare the case file for prosecutors.
