Chicago—A series of violent incidents marred the Memorial Day weekend, resulting in one fatality and numerous injuries. Authorities reported 17 people were shot in various neighborhoods across the city from Friday evening through early Monday morning. Victims ranged in age from 18 to 59, highlighting a troubling pattern of gun violence impacting individuals of all demographics.
One of the weekend’s incidents occurred in Kenwood on Friday night, when a 46-year-old woman became entangled in a dispute with a man and another woman. The argument escalated quickly, and after being physically assaulted, the woman retrieved a firearm, shooting a 33-year-old woman who sustained injuries to her left armpit. She was subsequently hospitalized but reported to be in good condition. The assailants were taken into custody, and charges were expected to follow.
Earlier on Friday, a 28-year-old man was shot in the hip while walking in the 7300 block of South Winchester Avenue. After the incident, he made his own way to Holy Cross Hospital and was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
The violence continued into Saturday, with multiple shootings reported throughout the day. One particularly alarming incident occurred just after 2 a.m. in the 1700 block of North Spaulding Avenue. A 35-year-old man, involved in a dispute inside his car, exited the vehicle and was shot multiple times by another man who remained inside. The victim later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
Throughout Saturday, several other individuals were also struck by gunfire in different neighborhoods. A 39-year-old man suffered a wrist injury, while an 18-year-old man hospitalized later that day appeared in critical condition after being shot several times in an alley. As violence unfolded across various locations, much of the injured were sent to hospitals with varying conditions.
Sunday did not bring relief from the violence, as additional shooting incidents plagued the city. A pair of individuals were shot at a residence on South Calumet Avenue, one suffering critical injuries. Other reports included a 24-year-old man shot in the chest and a 49-year-old man receiving a bullet to his knee. The ongoing violence has left many within the community feeling unsettled and afraid as authorities strive to address and prevent further incidents.
As investigation efforts continued, police noted that they had not made any arrests in many of the reported shootings over the weekend. Community leaders are urging more action to be taken in order to curb the violence that has stymied progress in safe, peaceful living conditions across the city.
