LEESBURG, Fla. — An 18-year-old man turned himself in to local authorities on Friday following a deadly shooting that took place in the Carver Heights neighborhood. Kameryn Pickard, accompanied by his father, arrived at the Leesburg Police Department and was taken into custody in connection with the incident that claimed the life of 20-year-old Dontae Copeland.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene when the shooting occurred outside a residence on Tuskegee Street. One neighbor, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted hearing an initial disturbance followed by multiple gunshots. “It’s terrible how things unfolded,” the neighbor said, expressing sorrow over the events.
Arista Russell, another resident, reported hearing the shots and received calls for help from a group of children who witnessed the shooting. “I initially thought it was fireworks, but when I realized it was gunfire, I rushed to help,” Russell recalled. She found Copeland’s girlfriend distraught and calling for assistance.
Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and transported Copeland to UF Health Leesburg Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Russell expressed her heartbreak over the tragedy, noting that she had seen death before but not in such a violent context.
Reports indicate that the confrontation may have stemmed from Pickard seeking to engage Copeland at the home where the shooting occurred. Pickard now faces charges of premeditated murder and is being held without bond at the Lake County Jail.
This incident underscores the ongoing issues of gun violence and conflict resolution in the community. Russell urged others to contemplate the consequences of their actions, warning that such choices can lead to grave outcomes. “Consider your actions carefully,” she advised. “It could mean you end up in prison or worse.”
