SAN DIEGO, CA – A tragic incident unfolded at the Santa Fe Depot on the evening of January 28, 2025, leading to the death of a teenager. The sequence of events began just after 8:20 p.m. when San Diego police received an emergency call from a 61-year-old man claiming he had been assaulted on an Amtrak train.
By 8:45 p.m., police officers arrived at the scene to investigate the reported assault. However, the situation escalated at 8:51 p.m. when gunfire erupted on the west side platform of the Santa Fe Depot, unrelated to the initial call. Officer Daniel Gold, a two-year veteran, and another officer were nearby when the shots were fired.
Security footage revealed a 16-year-old, identified as Konoa Steven Wilson, a student from Bayside Community School, involved in an altercation with two individuals at the train platform. During the confrontation, one of the individuals fired several shots at Wilson, prompting the shooter and an accomplice to flee along the train tracks.
In a desperate attempt to escape, Wilson retraced his steps through the depot corridor toward Kettner Boulevard. Officer Gold, having exited his vehicle moments earlier, responded to the chaos and headed towards the commotion.
As Wilson reached the corridor’s entrance, he encountered Officer Gold. Despite the police’s efforts to provide immediate medical assistance, including CPR, Wilson succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the hospital.
A firearm was discovered concealed in Wilson’s clothing during the police’s aid efforts. The San Diego Police Department’s Central Division Investigations is delving into the initial shooting. Meanwhile, detectives swiftly identified and arrested the shooter, another 16-year-old, on February 6, 2025.
The investigation into the incident is comprehensive, with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit leading the charge. The District Attorney’s Office, the Bureau of Investigation, and the United States Attorney’s Office are all closely monitoring the case to assess any potential criminal liability on the part of the officers involved.
Additionally, the Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an inquiry to determine if there were any breaches of protocol during the incident.
