Teen Indicted for Assault After Fuel Drum Explosion Injures 11 at Kodiak Beach Party

Kodiak, AK — A 16-year-old has been indicted on charges of first- and third-degree assault following a severe incident at a teen party on a Kodiak beach that resulted in an explosion injuring 11 other adolescents. The incident, which occurred during a gathering at White Sands Beach on Nov. 10, involved the teen reportedly throwing a 50-gallon fuel drum into a bonfire, causing the explosion, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The repercussions of the blast were significant, with eight of the injured teens needing hospital treatment. In more critical cases, five were airlifted to Anchorage for advanced medical care. The shocking event has profoundly impacted the Kodiak community, leading to a strong wave of support for the injured.

The accused, Kavik Skonberg, was detained following the incident. Although juvenile proceedings generally remain confidential, Alaska law mandates that teens 16 and older charged with major felonies, such as first-degree assault, face charges in adult court. Skonberg, who was indicted this week, faces four counts of first-degree assault and seven counts of third-degree assault.

At the time of the explosion, which troopers were alerted to around 1:15 a.m., there were an estimated 20 to 40 partygoers at the beach. The location, about 11 miles north of the City of Kodiak on Monashka Bay, is a favored spot for recreational activities and social gatherings among local high school students.

Darryl Thompson, Skonberg’s attorney, expressed his client’s intention to plead not guilty at the upcoming court appearance scheduled for Monday. “He does persist in his innocence and will maintain that,” Thompson stated, emphasizing Skonberg’s stance.

As Skonberg awaits his day in court, not currently in custody, the Kodiak community continues to rally around the teens impacted by the traumatic event. The incident not only raises concerns about safety at social gatherings but also underlines the potential severity of reckless behavior.

The exact details of the explosion and the full scope of injuries remain under investigation as local authorities and the community seek to understand and respond to the tragic occurrence. As the court date approaches, many are awaiting further developments in this case that has shaken a tight-knit island community to its core.
