Teen Faces Charges in West Potomac Stabbing

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Tensions ran high at West Potomac High School following a stabbing incident that left a student hospitalized. The incident, which unfolded in a hallway, has led to increased security measures and community concern.

As students arrived the morning after the incident, they were required to pass through metal detectors, a new precautionary measure implemented overnight. This move is part of a weapons detection pilot program by Fairfax County, which had not initially included this school.

The altercation involved three students who were reportedly familiar with each other. The school’s resource officer quickly responded to aid the 16-year-old victim, while the 15-year-old alleged attacker was detained immediately. Another student involved was questioned by authorities.

Many parents voiced their dissatisfaction with the school’s handling of the situation, particularly the delay in communication and the lack of clarity in the initial alerts. The school had sent out a “stay put, stay tuned” notice, which typically allows for student pick-up, but this was not permitted, leaving parents frustrated.

One mother described the frantic journey to the school after receiving multiple calls from her child, only to be met with limited information and a locked-down campus. Similar concerns were raised by others who felt left in the dark during a critical time.

The school district later explained that the restrictions on parent access were due to the ongoing police investigation and the necessity of managing the crime scene. A knife was found at the site, underscoring the seriousness of the incident.

Superintendent Michelle Reid praised the quick actions of the school staff and security personnel, noting that their response may have been life-saving for the student, who has since been moved to a stable condition.

As the school community processes the event, officials emphasize the importance of cooperation and vigilance to ensure safety. Classes will continue with the new security protocols in place.
