Belen, NM — A 16-year-old boy was detained early Saturday morning on charges of first-degree murder following his confession to the killings of four family members in their home near Belen, about 33 miles south of Albuquerque, according to New Mexico State Police.
The teenager, who was described by authorities as “extremely intoxicated,” made a distressing 911 call at 3:32 a.m., alerting the police about the deaths. When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, the young suspect walked out of the house, hands raised, to surrender.
Upon entering the residence, authorities discovered four deceased individuals and located a handgun on the kitchen table, suggesting the weapon might have been used in the homicides. Police have withheld the names of both the suspect and the victims, adhering to standard policies involving minors.
The victims’ ages were given as 42, 35, 16, and 14. Although the specific relationships among the deceased and the suspect were not immediately disclosed, police reported that the young caller admitted to dispatchers that he had killed his family members.
Following the incident, the suspect was transported to a hospital for detoxification. After being medically cleared, he was booked into the Juvenile Justice Center in Albuquerque in the early hours of Sunday.
Currently, investigators and forensic teams are painstakingly examining the crime scene and interviewing potential witnesses to piece together the events that led to this tragedy. However, authorities have not suggested any motives for the killings at this stage of their investigation.
Officials expect to complete their inquiry soon, after which the findings will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office, which will then decide the prosecution’s course.
