TAMPA, FL — An 18-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a brutal assault that led to the death of a 65-year-old woman in Tampa, authorities announced. The attack, which took place in December last year, resulted in the woman’s death nearly four months after the assault due to complications from severe head injuries.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred early in the morning on December 26, when deputies were called to a scene at University Area Park following reports of a violent robbery. Surveillance footage from the area played a crucial role in piecing together the events of that day.
Officials stated that the footage showed the suspect, identified as Antonio Gueits, approaching the victim, Cerida Charon, and striking her in the face, causing her to fall to the ground. In a horrific act of violence, the assailant then proceeded to repeatedly stomp on Charon’s head while she was unconscious, inflicting fatal injuries including severe bone fractures and a traumatic brain bleed.
Following the assault, Gueits allegedly stole Charon’s purse and fled the scene. Police were able to swiftly identify and apprehend Gueits later on the same day without any further incidents.
Cerida Charon was immediately rushed to a local hospital where she remained under medical care until she passed away. The autopsy, performed by the Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office, later confirmed that the death was due to complications from blunt force head trauma and ruled it a homicide.
In a statement, Sheriff Chad Chronister condemned the attack, describing it as a “senseless and inhumane” act over a minor theft. He emphasized the brutality of the crime and the prolonged suffering it caused to the victim. “This innocent woman endured months of pain and struggle, all stemming from a vicious assault over a purse,” Chronister said. “With her unfortunate demise, our commitment is stronger than ever to ensure that the perpetrator faces the full consequences of his heinous actions.”
The charge of first-degree murder reflects the severity of the incident and the consequences it brought upon Cerida Charon. The community has expressed shock and outrage over the event, particularly because of its random and brutal nature.
As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on ensuring justice for Charon and her family, highlighting the broader implications of violence in the community. The Sheriff’s Office reiterated their commitment to safety and justice, underscoring the importance of vigilance and community support in preventing such tragedies in the future.
