Tampa Police Arrest Shooter in DJ’s Tragic Road Rage Killing Following Community Outcry

TAMPA, Fla. — A local DJ was shot and killed in a roadway dispute, prompting police to arrest a 31-year-old man nearly a week later. Joel Moreno Cobo faces charges of second-degree murder following the death of 41-year-old Dedrick Lamar Sykes, who was known in the community as DJ ShyGuy.

The incident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 near the intersection of E 5th Avenue and N 22nd Street. Police responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Sykes lying between two vehicles—a black BMW sedan and a red Jeep Grand Cherokee. Despite immediate medical attention, Sykes was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Moreno Cobo was present at the scene when officers arrived. According to authorities, a firearm was found holstered in his waistband and was subsequently collected as evidence. During the investigation, he reportedly claimed he acted in self-defense and cooperated with law enforcement, agreeing to be interviewed.

Detectives learned that Moreno Cobo was behind the wheel of the BMW when he became blocked by an SUV at a stop sign. Sykes was directly behind in the Jeep, and after a brief exchange of lights and movement, a confrontation ensued. Witnesses reported that Sykes exited his vehicle unarmed and was shot moments later, contradicting earlier claims of threatening behavior.

Investigators have stated there were no indications that Sykes had made any threats or suggested he was armed prior to the shooting. The case drew significant attention from the community, which demanded accountability and transparency during the investigation.

Following consistent public pressure for updates on the case, authorities arrested Moreno Cobo on Thursday and transported him to Orient Road Jail. Police Chief Lee Bercaw emphasized the importance of thorough investigation, stating, “Justice is rooted in evidence, and that has guided our entire investigation.”

Bercaw also acknowledged the challenge faced by Sykes’ family as they cope with their loss. The chief reassured the community that the police remained dedicated to uncovering the facts surrounding the tragic event. As the investigation unfolds, the case has sparked dialogue about violence and accountability within the community, making it a pivotal point of concern among local residents and law enforcement.
