TACOMA, Wash. – In response to growing concerns over public safety, Metro Parks Tacoma is contemplating the installation of permanent surveillance cameras throughout its parks. This development follows a troubling episode last Thursday when a woman was sexually assaulted near the off-leash dog area in Tacoma’s popular Point Defiance Park, as evening fell and the park was nearing its closure.
The incident has heightened local unease, spotlighting a series of violent occurrences in recent years that are unusual for the renowned park. Up until now, efforts such as adjusted park hours and temporary camera installations have been implemented to deter crime, but with limited success.
Angie Castro, a frequent visitor to the park, expressed her distress, noting the park’s reputation as a sanctuary for relaxation and solitude has been marred by these violent disruptions. “It’s disheartening to hear of such incidents in a place meant for peace,” said Castro.
Tacoma Police are actively searching for the assailant but face challenges as the victim could not provide a detailed description. Reports confirm the victim immediately sought medical attention following the assault, though specifics about the encounter, including whether the assailant was armed, remain unclear.
Joe Brady, a spokesperson for Metro Parks Tacoma, reflects on the situation with concern. “The recurrence of these violent acts at Point Defiance is alarming. It’s imperative we implement changes to ensure the safety of our visitors,” Brady stated. The decision to potentially upgrade to permanent surveillance arises from a necessity to gather more reliable digital evidence for law enforcement and to create a deterrent presence within the park confines.
In the light of recent incidents, including last year’s shooting which injured a child and a vicious stabbing earlier this year, park officials had temporarily installed cameras. Brady explained that while these were somewhat effective as deterrents, they lacked the necessary quality to assist police investigations significantly.
Authorities have identified approximately 12-15 strategic locations for these cameras following consultation with security experts and police reports. The next steps involve reaching out to security vendors to discuss robust security systems capable of providing comprehensive coverage and high-quality digital recordings.
