REDDING, Calif. — Authorities in Shasta County have successfully apprehended a man accused of violently assaulting a resident with an axe, bringing an end to a tense situation that prompted a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. The arrest occurred Friday afternoon when officers from the Redding Police Department located the suspect, John Yu, without incident.
The violent episode unfolded on Thursday afternoon when deputies responded to reports of an assault on Manzanoaks Drive. A distressed resident alerted law enforcement that Yu, her nephew, had attacked another individual in the home. As the chaos escalated, residents sought refuge in an upstairs bedroom while Yu wielded the axe, causing considerable damage to the property and striking a door repeatedly.
Upon arrival, deputies noticed Yu fleeing the scene, the axe still in hand. Their efforts to capture him were complicated by adverse weather conditions, which hampered a search that included K-9 units and aerial support from a drone team. Despite these challenges, a concerted search effort was launched, leading to an initial shelter-in-place warning issued to residents within a half-mile radius. This alert was later expanded to cover an area two miles around the incident.
Meanwhile, the victim of the attack was transported to a local hospital, suffering from multiple injuries, including lacerations and a broken forearm. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.
Following the successful apprehension of Yu, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office assured the public that there was no ongoing threat. The agency expressed gratitude to local residents for providing information and staying vigilant during the search.
John Yu is described as an adult Asian male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a slim build, last seen wearing all black. Authorities had urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the sheriff’s office, emphasizing that he was to be considered armed and dangerous.
With the situation resolved, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging community members to remain alert and report any suspicious activity.
