Mountain View, Hawaii – A tragic sequence of events unfolded Tuesday when a woman was fatally shot early in the morning and the suspect was later killed by police in an encounter within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Isaiah Kaleo Jiaan Fourshey of Mountain View, was believed to be armed and became the focus of a manhunt following the shooting incident at a residence in Mountain View. The search culminated in an officer-involved shooting near the Nāmakanipaio Campground off Highway 11 in the park area around 6 p.m., leading to Fourshey’s death.
According to the police, the violent spree began shortly after midnight on Tuesday, when Fourshey allegedly visited the home of his ex-girlfriend’s mother on Hibiscus Street in Mountain View. It was reported that Fourshey was searching for his ex-girlfriend but instead encountered her father, at whom he reportedly fired multiple shots. Fortunately, the man was not hit.
The situation escalated when police received another call from Fourshey’s ex-girlfriend, who was staying at her sister’s residence on Plumeria Street. She reported that Fourshey had forcibly entered the home by kicking in the front door and fired multiple shots at her and her sister. The ex-girlfriend’s sister, 25-year-old Latisha Soares, was struck by the gunfire and later died from her injuries at Hilo Benioff Medical Center at 2:03 a.m.
In response to these violent attacks, law enforcement agencies launched an intensive search for Fourshey, deploying dozens of officers throughout the area. The search ended when an encounter at the Nāmakanipaio Campground led to the fatal shooting of Fourshey by police officers.
Following the shooting, a segment of Highway 11 was temporarily closed, impacting traffic to and from the campground. Both the highway and the campground have since been reopened to the public.
In the wake of these events, the Hawaii Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards has initiated a review of the incident, a routine procedure in cases involving officer-involved shootings. Additionally, the involved officers, one with 15 years of service and another with seven, have been placed on administrative leave pending a psychological evaluation to ensure they are fit for duty.
This incident, occurring within the jurisdiction of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, has drawn the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which now leads the ongoing investigation. The FBI’s Honolulu field office is handling inquiries regarding the case.
Community members and officials have expressed deep concern over the tragic events, highlighting the impact of domestic incidents on broader public safety. This case continues to unfold as investigators piece together the circumstances leading up to both shootings, seeking to provide clarity and justice for the victims involved.
