CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. – A deadly shooting in Cumberland County has left one person in custody and another injured. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of shots fired and a fire at a home, with shots still being fired upon their arrival.
The incident took place on Evans Dairy Road just after 11 a.m., and one person was injured and airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The suspect is now in custody, identified as Matias Matthew Bagby, 45, of Fayetteville, by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office on Monday evening.
Bagby has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling, and breaking and entering with intent to terrorize. Fire crews were also called to the scene as a home was destroyed by flames.
Friend of the victim told authorities that the shooting stemmed from a landlord-tenant dispute. Despite the tragic incident, there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Bagby is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a denied bond, awaiting his first appearance in court on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. This incident has brought a tragic outcome and the community is left to grapple with the aftermath of the violent events.
