Suspect Charged with Murder After Assault on Beloved 74-Year-Old in Pinole

Pinole, California – A 27-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a 74-year-old woman who was critically injured in a May assault, local authorities announced Wednesday.

On May 28, Vera Rowsey and a companion were walking their dog near Bayfront Park when they were attacked by a suspect wielding a blunt object. Rowsey was transported to a hospital for treatment, where she remained until her death on June 4.

Police quickly identified Miguel Patino as the alleged attacker, leading to his arrest in Richmond. He was initially booked on charges of aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and elder abuse. Following Rowsey’s death, the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office escalated the charges against him to include murder. Patino is currently being held in custody with bail set at $1,125,000.

Pinole Mayor Cameron Sasai expressed sorrow over Rowsey’s passing, remarking on the devastating impact of the incident on the community. “Vera Rowsey was a beloved member of our Pinole community.
