Abuja, Nigeria — The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has expressed outrage over the attack on Hon. Jude Ezenwafor, the governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State. Ezenwafor was shot on Friday evening by assailants while traveling with two others in a vehicle.
In a statement released by COSEYL’s President General, Goodluck Ibem, the group condemned the violence as a threat not only to Ezenwafor but to the very principles of democracy in Nigeria. The incident occurred in the Wuse 2 neighborhood as Ezenwafor was returning home from an engagement.
Ibem described the incident as a significant assault on the nation’s political fabric and called for immediate action. “This brutal act is deeply troubling and must be addressed by authorities,” he stated, urging a thorough investigation into the attack.
The coalition voiced its concerns regarding a growing trend of political violence, which they believe could destabilize the peaceful political climate ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Anambra in 2025. “It is essential that law enforcement agencies provide adequate protection for all candidates to ensure safety during this critical time,” Ibem emphasized.
Amid rising incidents of intimidation and lawlessness, the group has appealed for vigilance among citizens. They encourage the public to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement to curb the ongoing violence targeted against political figures.
In light of the attack, COSEYL extended its sympathies to Ezenwafor, who remains hospitalized, and conveyed hopes for his swift recovery. “His dedication to the people of Anambra, particularly the youth, must be safeguarded,” they noted in their statement.
As the nation grapples with tensions surrounding the electoral process, COSEYL’s call for accountability resonates with many citizens yearning for a safe and democratic environment. The group firmly stands against violence and advocates for the rule of law, insisting that perpetrators must face justice swiftly.
The coalition’s statements underscore the urgency for security improvements in the lead-up to the elections, presenting the incident as a wake-up call for Nigerian authorities to reinforce protective measures for all involved in the democratic process.
