Solihull, UK — A violent episode unfolded in the quiet streets of Solihull when a local man attacked a woman in her own home, leading to his arrest and a subsequent five-year prison sentence. John Cummings, 44, forced his way into a residence in Smiths Woods, instigating a brutal assault under the pretenses of confronting another occupant.
During the incident, Cummings assaulted the woman who attempted to bar his entry. He choked her and repeatedly struck her with the leg of a chair, causing substantial injuries to her face, head, neck, and arm. Fleeing before law enforcement could arrive, Cummings was apprehensive for days until police tracked him down at his Sheldon home.
When officers attempted to apprehend him from his residence, Cummings responded with violence, lunging at them. The confrontation escalated when police were compelled to use a taser to subdue him after forcing entry.
Throughout his arrest, Cummings exhibited further aggressive behavior towards the officers, including the use of racial slurs. Investigation revealed that prior to the assault, he had been sending abusive messages and voicemails, targeting a man he had initially planned to confront.
Charged with multiple offenses including wounding, aggravated burglary, non-fatal strangulation, harassment, assault on an emergency worker, and racially aggravated harassment, Cummings faced trial at Birmingham Crown Court. Found guilty of all charges, he received a five-year jail sentence on December 6, 2024.
Sergeant Tracey Gordon of the Solihull CID expressed pride in the collaborative effort that led to Cummings’ arrest. “This was a team effort that highlighted our commitment to community safety,” Gordon said. “The diligent work by our officers, together with the coordination with the Local Enforcement Officer’s team, was instrumental in addressing this horrific attack.”
