GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A 41-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history has been charged with murdering his father just days after being released from prison. The incident, sparked by a dispute over money, has left the local community in shock.
Authorities said Derek Steven Hughes allegedly killed his father, 74-year-old Steve Hughes, early Tuesday morning at their home. The victim died from injuries sustained during what police described as a physical altercation inside his trailer. Details regarding the specific nature of the confrontation were not disclosed.
Derek Hughes had been on parole for only six days, having been released on Aug. 6 after serving time for drug-related offenses. He had a record of violent crimes, with prior convictions that included assault, strangulation, and making threats. His most recent release has raised concerns among family members and residents in the area.
After the alleged incident, Derek was arrested later that same day in Kings Mountain, located a short distance from his father’s home. He faces a charge of first-degree murder and is currently being held without bond at the Gaston County Jail.
Family members expressed their devastation over the loss. Steve Hughes’ daughter described her father as a gentle soul who enjoyed working on cars, fishing, and camping. She emphasized her determination to seek justice, declaring that she would go to any lengths to honor his memory.
Community members have also reacted with disbelief. Conversations around the neighborhood reflect a mix of sadness and anger as they grapple with the violent turn of events in what was considered a peaceful area.
Derek Hughes is scheduled to appear in court to answer the murder charge, while his family’s grief continues to unfold in the wake of this tragic loss. The case has drawn attention to issues surrounding criminal justice and the challenges of reintegrating former inmates into society, particularly those with histories of violent behavior.
