Agartala, India — Alarm over security lapses at GB Hospital deepened following a violent incident early Sunday, where a doctor was assaulted by relatives of a patient seeking emergency care. This incident has raised serious questions about the safety measures in place at the facility, which serves as a key referral center for the region.
The attack occurred around 3 a.m. when Dr. Liton Das was treating a critically ill patient who had ingested a toxic mixture of poison and alcohol. Reportedly, the assailants, identified as Bapan Sarkar and Tapan Sarkar, confronted Dr. Das after he had provided treatment to their father, Bimal Sarkar. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the two men overpowered the doctor, throwing him to the ground and assaulting him despite the hospital staff’s attempts to intervene.
Dr. Avik Deb, who witnessed the attack, expressed outrage at the increasing violence faced by medical personnel. “This level of aggression towards healthcare workers is intolerable,” he said. “We’ve reported this to the police and submitted a formal complaint to health department officials and the medical superintendent. They assure us of action, but we will hold off until Monday to see if anything changes.”
The emergency department has seen a surge in patients, managing around 110 cases from Saturday evening through the night, heightening concerns among staff about their safety while providing critical care. Dr. Deb added that ongoing threats could force medical professionals to consider striking if security measures remain inadequate.
Recent months have seen a rash of incidents at GB Hospital, including theft and harassment of staff, which has further complicated the environment in which healthcare workers operate. Hospital insiders noted that, despite numerous complaints, little has been done to improve conditions.
Many in the medical community are now calling for immediate changes to ensure the safety of both patients and healthcare providers. The lack of decisive action from authorities has stoked fears that unless significant improvements are made, vital healthcare services may be jeopardized.
As the situation evolves, the health department will face pressure to address these growing concerns effectively. Healthcare workers and the public alike are awaiting concrete responses from officials in the coming days.
