Fairport, New York — A woman was left in disbelief after witnessing a bloodied man pleading for assistance on a trail in Perinton, shortly after a severe stabbing incident. Authorities have arrested 30-year-old Derrick Van Epps of Palmyra, charging him with attempted murder and assault in connection with the attack.
The victim, identified as Dylan Ghaemi, reported to law enforcement that he believed the brutal assault was unprovoked and may have involved racial motives. Erin Wilson, who was out hiking with her boyfriend, recounted the harrowing moment when they heard frantic cries for help. “We heard someone screaming for aid and saw Dylan covered in blood. It was shocking and alarming, so we called 911 immediately,” Wilson stated.
According to court documents, Ghaemi was walking his dog when he briefly exchanged pleasantries with Van Epps, only to be ambushed from behind and stabbed multiple times. In a courageous bid for safety, Ghaemi managed to flee, eventually encountering Wilson before reaching a nearby residence for assistance.
Local law enforcement officials were able to track Van Epps to Egypt Park, where he was apprehended without incident. Authorities confirmed that Van Epps is relatively new to the area and its legal system. He is currently held at the Monroe County Jail, awaiting a court hearing scheduled for Friday.
