Bloomington, Indiana – Multiple fatalities have been reported in Indiana and Georgia following severe weather conditions that included tornadoes tearing paths of destruction from the Midwest to the South on Sunday. The storms also left over half a million people without electricity, causing widespread damage and disruptions.
In Lost River Township, Indiana, a suspected tornado hit a home, resulting in the death of a husband. His wife was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The area around their home, described as rural, experienced downed trees and significant damage from the storms. Tornadoes were also spotted in other parts of Indiana, and buildings were flattened in Greenwood. Additionally, hail the size of tennis balls was reported in Indiana and Arkansas.
On Monday, damage assessments were underway in Georgia after the weather tore across a portion of the state, including the Atlanta area. The severe weather event caused a tree to fall and crush a man in Atlanta’s northeast, resulting in his death. Other injuries were reported after a tree fell on a car. Flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport were delayed or suspended as a result of the storm.
The storms triggered at least 450 reports of damaging winds and massive hail, leaving over 700,000 people without power on Sunday. The severe weather threat spanned from the Ohio Valley to the South and lasted until Monday morning, causing widespread havoc and destruction in its wake.
