HEBER CITY, Utah – A series of fatal accidents along US Highway 189 near Deer Creek Reservoir in Heber City have raised concerns about road safety and the need for potential changes to prevent further tragedies.
The most recent incident occurred last Saturday, claiming the life of 24-year-old Cory Hughes. Hughes was traveling southbound on the highway when his motorcycle collided with a Toyota Prius crossing the road from Main Canyon Road. This intersection has been the site of several other accidents, including another motorcycle collision and a wrong-way crash resulting in multiple fatalities.
According to Utah Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Cameron Roden, high speeds have been a contributing factor in the fatal crashes. He emphasized the importance of obeying both the posted speed limit and advisory speeds in the area, which is 60 miles per hour and 50 miles per hour for heavier vehicles, respectively.
Wyatt Wooley, a spokesperson for the Utah Department of Transportation, stated that the department is committed to road safety and will work with the Utah Highway Patrol to determine potential changes in the area. However, any proposed changes will undergo a thorough study to ensure their effectiveness.
Both Saturday’s crash and the wrong-way crash in April are still under investigation, as authorities continue to assess the circumstances leading to these tragic events.
The string of accidents has sparked concern among residents and officials. As the community grapples with these tragedies, there is a growing call for comprehensive measures to enhance safety and prevent future accidents on this stretch of US Highway 189.
