SEASIDE, Calif. — In a troubling burst of violence that appeared random, a 29-year-old man was arrested by Seaside police after he allegedly attacked several individuals Thursday night, leaving the community shocked and authorities searching for a motive.
Hector Chavez faces multiple charges including attempted murder, battery with serious bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon, violation of probation, and driving under the influence. The series of assaults began when Chavez reportedly stabbed a 44-year-old woman in the Eucalyptus area of Laguna Grande Park late at night. The victim managed to escape and sought help from a nearby Walgreens to call emergency services around 11:23 p.m.
Police reports indicate that following the stabbing, Chavez was linked to another brutal attack where two elderly men, aged 60 and 63, were found badly beaten near the Hillside Area bridge. One of the men sustained severe injuries to the head. Both victims were promptly transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Seaside Police Commander Matt Doza expressed his bewilderment at the events, noting that such acts of violence were unusual for the area. “This park is known for its tranquility, especially on this side,” Doza said, emphasizing the seemingly arbitrary nature of the attacks.
Upon arresting Chavez, investigators found him in possession of incriminating evidence including the weapon believed to have been used in the attacks. The connection between Chavez and his victims appears non-existent, as police disclosed that nothing was stolen and the assaults seem unprovoked.
Local resident Mario Prado Ochoa voiced his concern over the incident, stating that while the park is generally considered safe, the perception of safety has been somewhat marred by issues of homelessness. “This occurrence is disturbing; it’s the first event of this nature I’ve heard about here,” Ochoa commented. He suggested that enhancing the lighting in the park could be a simple yet effective measure to increase safety and reassure the community.
Authorities are urging anyone who was in the vicinity at the time of the incidents to come forward with any information that might help elucidate why these violent acts occurred. The lack of obvious motive and the randomness of the attacks continue to puzzle both the community and law enforcement officials as they work to piece together the circumstances surrounding Thursday night’s violence.
As the investigation continues, the Seaside community remains on edge, hoping for answers that can restore peace and safety to their cherished local park and surrounding areas.
