Scranton, PA — A local man is facing charges after his backyard waste-burning routine escalated into a forceful explosion. Authorities arrested 45-year-old Salvatore Marcel Licata following an incident that alerted and shook the Scranton community.
Emergency services responded to the scene on Elizabeth Street after receiving several reports of a booming explosion. On-site, fire crews engaged with Licata, who admitted to burning garbage in a makeshift burner which he fashioned out of an old pool covered with debris.
According to officials, Licata’s method involved using a substantial amount of gasoline, approximately five gallons, to ignite the fire. Despite the loud blast echoed through the vicinity, Licata’s spouse indicated that he deemed the explosion insubstantial.
First responders found that the fire mainly consisted of garbage and tree branches. However, the combination of elements led to an unexpected explosion upon ignition, prompting immediate intervention from the fire department.
Witnesses in the area described the alarming effect of the blast, with two individuals noting that it was strong enough to cause their houses to tremble. This added to the urgency of the response by fire services, who were initially unsure if they were dealing with a more dangerous gas explosion.
