Toronto, Canada – A Toronto man, 46, has been charged with attempted murder and other offenses following a violent 2018 incident in Scarborough that injured two women, one of them a teenager. Authorities said the man was apprehended recently in Guyana after eluding police for more than six years.
The incident unfolded on the evening of Nov. 23, 2018, when the suspect allegedly entered a high-rise building on Trudelle Street, near the intersection of McCowan Road and Eglinton Avenue East. According to police, an adult female victim, who was acquainted with the assailant, was assaulted.
The situation escalated dramatically when a female youth was reportedly stabbed multiple times with an edged weapon by the same assailant. The suspect then fled the scene, sparking a protracted manhunt that initially failed to locate him.
The breakthrough in the case came when the suspect, identified as Harry Rajkumar of Toronto, was arrested on Dec. 20, 2024, by authorities in Guyana. Following his arrest, he was detained and subsequently extradited to Canada to face justice.
In addition to attempted murder, Rajkumar faces charges including two counts each of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. He is also charged with failing to comply with a recognizance order, disobeying a court order, and failing to appear in court.
The arrest has brought some relief to the community, particularly given the brutal nature of the crimes involved. However, the long delay in apprehending Rajkumar raised concerns about the challenges of international crime-fighting and the nuances of cross-border legal processes.
Law enforcement officials have emphasized the importance of international cooperation in such cases and have expressed their gratitude to Guyanese authorities for their assistance. They have also urged anyone with additional information about the case to come forward, emphasizing that community assistance is crucial in resolving such violent crimes.
Individuals with information are encouraged to contact the Toronto Police at 416-808-4300 or to reach out anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
The case is a stark reminder of the persisting issues of domestic violence and violent crimes in communities, highlighting the need for vigilant and continuous efforts in law enforcement and community support systems to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
