San Diego, CA – A tragic incident unfolded early Wednesday morning in San Diego, leaving a married couple dead and a police officer wounded. Rachael Martinez, 31, and Jose Medina, 39, were fatally shot in their car just blocks away from a courthouse where they were scheduled to attend a hearing concerning a restraining order against Martinez’s former lover.
Christopher Farrell, 26, identified as the assailant, later engaged Harbor Police in a fierce shootout in the nearby Little Italy neighborhood. The confrontation, which lasted under 90 seconds, ended with Farrell mortally wounded. He died shortly after at a hospital.
Details released by the San Diego Police Department reveal that the deadly sequence of events followed weeks of escalating tensions. Martinez and Medina, who were parents to four children, had recently sought legal protection against Farrell, stemming from allegations of domestic violence and threats after Martinez ended a brief romantic involvement with him.
Police Chief Jud Campbell stated that officers had been actively investigating the allegations Martinez made against Farrell but initially struggled with insufficient evidence to proceed immediately. Despite these hurdles, a judge granted Martinez and later, her husband, temporary restraining orders against Farrell.
The restraining orders, however, appeared not to have been served before the fatal shooting, partly because Farrell had been dismissed from his job at a local transit system after his arrest related to the domestic violence allegations.
The incident began with calls to 911 around 8:22 a.m., reporting gunshots on Union Street, near the courthouse. Witnesses described the gunman’s attire and direction of flight, sparking an extensive police search. A civilian later noticed Farrell hiding near Juniper Street and Kettner Boulevard and alerted the police.
As Harbor Police approached, Farrell reportedly used an electrical box as cover and fired at the officers, striking one in the hip before being fatally wounded by return fire. Besides the firearm used in the shootout, police found additional ammunition and several knives on Farrell.
The injured officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, is recovering, according to Harbor Police Chief Magda Fernandez. Commending the rapid response of her team, Fernandez emphasized the dangers law enforcement face daily.
Following the tragedy, the community showed its support for the bereaved family. By Thursday afternoon, a small memorial with candles, flowers, and offerings began to form at the scene on Union Street, a solemn reminder of the lives cut terribly short.
As the investigation continues, both families have sought privacy. Martinez and Medina’s children, who range in age from 3 to 15, are now at the center of a sudden and heartbreaking loss, leading community members and social services to rally in support.
This incident has once again raised concerns about domestic violence, the effectiveness of protective orders, and the challenges faced by law enforcement in preventing such violent outcomes.
