Salisbury University Shaken: Students Face Charges in Alleged Hate Crime Targeting Gay Man Lured on Grindr

Salisbury, MD — A disturbing incident at Salisbury University where a gay man was allegedly targeted and assaulted by a group of students has led to multiple arrests, Maryland police announced. The events, which unfolded on October 15, have sent shockwaves through the campus community, prompting a firm response from university officials.

Authorities revealed that the victim was lured to an off-campus apartment under the pretense of a casual encounter arranged via Grindr, a popular LGBTQ+ dating app. Police reports indicate that the assailants used a fake profile to set up the meeting. Upon arrival, the victim was purportedly ambushed by approximately 15 male attackers, enduring verbal and physical abuse.

The Salisbury University Police were alerted to the incident on October 31st, and subsequent investigations led to the retrieval of cell phone footage showcasing the vicious attack. The footage, which has sparked widespread outrage, shows the assailants, some of whom are identified as students of the university, assaulting the victim while using homophobic slurs.

Zachary Leinemann, 18, was identified by police as the individual who created the deceptive Grindr account. He, along with eleven other suspects, faces charges including First Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, False Imprisonment, and several counts of Hate Crimes. The suspects reportedly include members of a fraternity and range in age from 18 to 21.

The attackers purportedly impeded the victim’s attempts to escape, leading to serious physical injuries including bruises and a broken rib. Hospital records confirm the victim received medical treatment following his escape from the scene. According to reports, the victim delayed reporting the incident due to threats from the attackers and a genuine fear for his safety, suspecting he was targeted because of his sexual orientation.

Salisbury University President Carolyn Ringer Lepre publicly condemned the attack. In a heartfelt statement, she expressed her deep distress over the involvement of SU students in such a heinous act. “As a mother and a community member, it is profoundly difficult to express the horror such acts instill in us,” Lepre stated. She affirmed that the university stands against violence toward LGBTQ+ communities and emphasized that such actions are contrary to the university’s values of community, respect, and belonging.

In response to the incident, President Lepre announced that the university would take definitive suspension actions against the involved students, underlining the seriousness with which the university treats hate crimes and violence.

The community reaction has been one of shock and solidarity, with several campus groups and local organizations expressing their support for the victim and calling for stringent actions against the perpetrators. This incident has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding safety and inclusivity for LGBTQ+ individuals, both at Salisbury University and in broader society.

As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in ensuring comprehensive justice for the victim. Meanwhile, the university has pledged to review its policies and increase efforts to foster an environment where all members can feel secure and valued.
