AUSTIN, TX – A tragic road rage incident unfolded on a bustling stretch of Interstate 35 in Austin on a Saturday afternoon, marking the city’s seventh homicide of 2025. At approximately 4 p.m., emergency services received a flurry of 911 calls reporting a shooting near the busy intersection of the Interstate Highway 35 service road and Martin Luther King Boulevard.
The altercation began when Jacob Gonzalez, driving a gold Chevrolet Malibu, and Aiden MZ, a passenger in a Jeep SUV, became embroiled in a fierce road rage dispute. Witnesses recounted that debris was hurled from the Malibu as Gonzalez passed the SUV, escalating tensions between the vehicles over several miles.
The encounter reached its climax at a red light where MZ exited the Jeep, visibly agitated and gesticulating toward Gonzalez’s car. Eyewitness accounts suggest the confrontation lasted only about 30 seconds before Gonzalez fired a shot, striking MZ.
Texas law prohibits the use of deadly force to instill fear; however, road rage incidents can quickly spiral out of control, with drivers often unaware of the potential dangers they may face. According to police, MZ was unarmed and did not make physical contact with Gonzalez’s vehicle. Officers arrived to find MZ lying in the road, fatally wounded by a single gunshot.
Gonzalez, 21, remained at the scene and informed law enforcement that he intended to fire a warning shot, not a fatal one. Despite his claims, he now faces charges of first-degree murder.
This incident is not Gonzalez’s first encounter with the law involving firearms. In June 2023, he faced misdemeanor and felony charges after a shootout at a gas station, but those charges were subsequently dropped. At that time, Gonzalez was 19 years old.
