RIVIERA BEACH, FL – In the wake of a devastating minibike accident, Riviera Beach residents are uniting to remember Douglas Lundy, a 16-year-old whose life was tragically cut short. The community held a candlelight vigil at the site of the crash, West Blue Heron Boulevard, where they paid tribute with heartfelt messages, flowers, and candles.
Leading the vigil, Lundy’s mother was joined by family and friends who recalled his warmth and infectious smile. “He brought light to everyone he met,” shared cousin Tia Ingraham, as the community gathered to mourn and support one another.
The accident occurred when Lundy, on a gas-powered minibike, collided with a car after entering oncoming traffic. Neither Lundy nor his 17-year-old passenger, who suffered minor injuries, wore helmets. The bike was also not legal for street use.
Authorities are urging parents to have critical conversations with their children about the safety of riding motorized vehicles. Traffic Sergeant Brian DeSantis highlighted the importance of protective gear and adherence to road safety rules, emphasizing that such bikes are not allowed on public streets.
Lundy’s family is seeking prayers and hopes their heartache serves as a reminder for others to prioritize safety. “We need prayers for our strength, especially for his mother and siblings,” they said, urging parents to take precautions.
Police reiterated that minibikes should only be used in designated areas, underscoring the importance of awareness and safety to prevent future tragedies. The incident has sparked conversations about the need for stricter safety measures.
The community’s response has been overwhelming, with many coming forward to support Lundy’s family, reflecting the profound impact he had on those around him.
