SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA – A tranquil outing on the Rappahannock River turned tragic for a local family last month. Danny Sumner, a devoted father and teacher, and his six-year-old son Donovan tragically lost their lives during a fishing trip, a beloved pastime they frequently enjoyed together. The community mourns the loss of these two lives, whose bond was evident through their shared love of fishing and biking.
Madeline Sumner, Danny’s wife and Donovan’s mother, fondly recalls the close-knit relationship between her husband and son. The pair spent much of March 22 biking together before heading to their favorite fishing spot near their home. It was a familiar routine, one that Donovan always cherished. However, the day took a devastating turn when Donovan fell into the river after catching a fish. Danny, in a desperate attempt to save his son, leaped into the water after him.
Despite the swift response from emergency services, both father and son drowned. Their bodies were later recovered by a dive team, leaving behind a heartbroken family and a grieving community. Madeline, now facing life without her husband and firstborn, emphasizes the importance of cherishing loved ones.
Danny Sumner was not only a loving father and husband but also a standout figure in his community. He was a former star basketball player at William and Mary and Paul VI Catholic High School. More than an athlete, he dedicated his life to education, serving as a special education teacher and basketball coach at Brook Point High School.
In the wake of this tragedy, Stafford County Public Schools expressed their sorrow over the loss of Danny and Donovan. They remembered Danny as a passionate educator and coach who left a lasting impact on his students. His dedication to both the classroom and the court inspired many, and his absence will be deeply felt.
The Sumners’ story serves as a poignant reminder of life’s fragility and the importance of treasuring every moment with loved ones. As the community rallies around Madeline and her two-year-old son D.J., their enduring love and support offer a glimmer of hope amid the sorrow.
