Fort Worth, Texas — A 77-year-old woman is speaking out after a harrowing home invasion that left her injured but resolute. June Gruebel, who experienced a brutal assault in her own home Monday night, is now urging others to remain vigilant about their safety.
Gruebel described the incident as surreal, remembering the aggressor’s unsettling gaze as he forced his way through the door. “When he came in, I asked him what he wanted, but he quickly struck me,” she recounted, detailing the onset of the violence.
During the attack, Gruebel faced a barrage of physical blows. “He held me down and kicked me repeatedly,” she said, relaying how she endured a flurry of punches and kicks that left her bruised. The assault escalated as the intruder threw kitchen items, causing further injury.
In an act of sheer determination, Gruebel focused on her escape amidst the turmoil. “Amidst all the chaos, I told myself to get out,” she recalled. Crawling toward her front door, she remembered the emergency button around her neck that could summon help.
After managing to reach the door, she activated the device. “I felt the string on me and pressed the button,” Gruebel said, relief evident in her voice. When police officers arrived, they found 21-year-old Cristian Mendez attempting to wrestle one of their weapons away.
Mendez was taken into custody on charges of burglary and attempting to disarm a police officer. “I truly believe that God was looking out for me,” Gruebel remarked, expressing gratitude for her survival.
Reflecting on her experience, Gruebel has a stark message for others. “Ladies, make sure you lock your doors. It’s crucial to stay safe.” Her resilience in the face of danger serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of safety awareness.
