Ocean City, New Jersey — A former congressional staff member faces serious legal repercussions after allegedly fabricating a story about being assaulted. Natalie Greene, 26, who previously worked for Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), stands accused of conspiracy and making false statements to law enforcement regarding a supposed attack in which she claimed three men assaulted her at gunpoint.
In July, Greene reported to authorities that she and a friend were hiking late at night when they were confronted by unidentified assailants. During her account, she alleged that the attackers bound her with zip ties and verbally assaulted her, using derogatory names during the incident.
Emergency responders arrived to find Greene in distress, with visible injuries and the phrase “Trump Whore” inscribed on her body in black marker. According to her claims, one of the assailants threatened her life if she called for help. Investigators later discovered that Greene’s injuries had been self-inflicted.
Further examination revealed that Greene had consulted a body modification professional to create the lacerations, following a specific design she provided beforehand. Additionally, law enforcement found zip ties in Greene’s vehicle, resembling those described in her report. Notably, her companion had allegedly searched for zip ties on her smartphone just days prior to the incident.
Greene made her initial court appearance last week and could face up to five years in prison and fines up to $250,000 for both conspiracy and making false statements to authorities. She was released under a $200,000 bond.
A spokesperson for Rep. Van Drew expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing that Greene is no longer affiliated with the congressman’s office. He extended thoughts and prayers for her well-being, indicating the office’s sadness regarding the situation.
The announcement of charges came from Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, who has faced scrutiny regarding her tenure in the role. Appointed to avoid a confirmation battle, Habba has continued her position beyond the typical 120-day limit, prompting discussion about her ongoing legal challenges.
