SILVER SPRING, Md. — A serious propane tank explosion sparked a major house fire Sunday afternoon, leaving an elderly woman and her dog homeless and causing significant damage to a community home. Emergency responders received the call shortly after 4:30 p.m. regarding a fire on Helena Drive, where flames erupted from a gas grill on the porch and quickly engulfed the two-story residence.
Firefighters from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service arrived to find the fire rapidly advancing through the home’s roof and extending to adjacent properties. Flames not only affected the first and second floors of the house but also caused damage to a nearby fence and melted parts of a neighbor’s siding.
During the chaos, the woman who lived alone in the burnt structure was able to escape with her dog. Although she opted against receiving medical care, her cat tragically did not survive the incident and was later discovered by firefighters.
As the fire escalated and the heat intensified, officials called for a second alarm, mobilizing a task force of about 85 firefighters and auxiliary personnel to combat the blaze. The fierce flames and extreme conditions necessitated an extensive response to bring the situation under control.
Officials estimated the total damages from the fire at approximately $580,000. Fire crews worked diligently to ensure that the fire did not spread further, demonstrating their commitment to safeguarding nearby homes and lives.
Residents in the neighborhood expressed their shock at the incident, with many rallying to support the affected woman and offering assistance in the aftermath. Local shelters and community organizations are working to provide temporary housing and support for her and her family pets.
The incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with propane use, particularly in residential areas. Fire officials were prompt in urging homeowners to ensure that all propane equipment is maintained and inspected regularly to prevent similar accidents in the future.
