MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – Tragedy struck a Burnsville neighborhood in the early hours of the morning when Shannon Cortez Gooden unleashed a barrage of over 100 rounds at police and first responders, claiming the lives of two officers and a paramedic. State investigators revealed this shocking turn of events, shedding light on the chaos that unfolded at Gooden’s residence on S. 33rd Avenue.
The victims, identified as Paul Elmstrand, Matthew Ruge, and firefighter/paramedic Adam Finseth, tragically lost their lives during the standoff. Reflecting the gravity of the situation, a public memorial service has been scheduled to honor their memory at Grace Church in Eden Prairie. The injured officer, Sgt. Adam Medlicott, is now recuperating at home from his wounds sustained during the incident.
According to reports provided by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), officers had initially responded to a distress call describing a sexual assault at Gooden’s home just before 2 a.m. Negotiations ensued for approximately 3 1/2 hours as attempts were made to peacefully resolve the situation. However, chaos erupted when Gooden suddenly opened fire on the officers without warning around 5:26 a.m.
In the exchange of gunfire, officers were wounded, with Ruge, Elmstrand, and Medlicott being initially shot inside the residence. As the situation escalated, further tragedy struck as Finseth was shot while attempting to assist his fellow colleagues. Despite efforts to contain the situation, Gooden persisted in firing upon law enforcement officials and the armored vehicle positioned on the scene.
The incident reached a devastating conclusion when Gooden turned the weapon on himself, ending the standoff. Upon further investigation by the BCA, it was discovered that Gooden had discharged more than 100 rifle rounds during the confrontation. The recovery of multiple firearms and extensive ammunition at the scene painted a grim picture of the violence that transpired.
As the investigation by the BCA continues, the findings will be handed over to the Dakota County Attorney’s Office for review, signaling the quest for justice in the aftermath of this harrowing event.
