Powerful Gas Explosion Rocks Wisconsin Town, Residents Evacuated Amid Emergency Response

CASCADE, Wisconsin — A powerful explosion shook the Town of Mitchell on Friday afternoon, startling residents and prompting an immediate response from emergency services. The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office received multiple reports of the blast around 1 p.m., later determining that an excavation crew accidentally ruptured a major natural gas line.

Upon arrival, authorities found that the explosion’s impact was so intense it could be felt and heard from several miles away. Four individuals suffered injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals. Additionally, about 60 homes within a 700-foot radius were evacuated as a precaution.

Local resident Vu Vang, who lives near the explosion site, described a moment of shock as he heard the deafening blast and observed a massive black cloud rising into the sky. Vang recorded video footage of the smoke billowing from the site, offering a glimpse into the chaotic scene.

Wally Froh, a long-time resident in the area, recounted his evacuation experience. Upon learning that residents needed to leave their homes, he rushed to assist his neighbor, who has a disability. “I had to open his garage door so he could get his car out and leave safely,” Froh explained.

As he stepped outside, Froh detected an overwhelming odor of gas that made him feel nauseous. “The smell was so intense it gave me a headache,” he said. “I’ve never encountered a gas leak that strong before.”

By 5:30 p.m., law enforcement had assessed the situation and declared the area safe for initial inspections. Seventeen fire departments responded to the incident, and two residences sustained damage due to the explosion. Experts from the fire department are working to monitor gas levels in the vicinity while providing necessary ventilation for affected homes.

Residents are gradually being allowed back into their properties, though Trio Lane will remain closed as investigators continue to probe the cause of the rupture and subsequent explosion.

The American Red Cross has established a shelter for those displaced by the incident at the Cascade Fire Department, offering a temporary refuge for families affected by the explosion. Those seeking assistance are encouraged to reach out to the Red Cross for support.

As investigations unfold, local authorities are focusing on ensuring the safety of residents and determining the next steps for recovery. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
