Police said the 15-year-old escaped into an apartment breezeway as neighbors reported the assault and officers rushed to the scene.
GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Calls from witnesses helped Gainesville police reach a 15-year-old girl as she was being attacked outside an apartment Wednesday night, leading officers to intervene and arrest a 29-year-old man who investigators say had broken through a wall into the teen’s home.
Police identified the man as Obed Reyes of Gainesville. Investigators said Reyes entered the apartment through a closet wall separating units at the complex on Summit Street. The girl was inside with two younger family members, ages 5 and 7, when the intrusion and assault began. Police said Reyes and the teenager lived in the same apartment complex but did not know each other.
According to police accounts, Reyes grabbed the teenager by her hair and began hitting her after entering the unit. The girl fought back and made it out of the apartment into a breezeway, where the confrontation continued. Authorities said she screamed for help as other residents became aware of what was happening.
Emergency calls reporting the attack brought officers to the complex shortly before 10 p.m. Police said witnesses described seeing a man dragging a teenage girl by her hair and striking her. Officers arrived while the assault was still underway and immediately separated the girl from the man, according to police.
Gainesville Police Capt. Justin Martin said the teenager fought her attacker, ran for help and drew attention to what was happening until assistance arrived. Police Chief Jay Parrish also credited residents who contacted 911, saying their quick response helped officers reach the victim and stop the attack.
Police said Reyes also threatened to rape the teenager during the assault. He was arrested at the scene and taken to the Hall County Jail. Authorities announced charges that include burglary, aggravated assault, attempted rape, kidnapping and two counts of cruelty to children.
The cruelty-to-children charges stem from the presence of the two young children during the incident, according to the charges announced by police. Investigators have not suggested that Reyes knew the teenager before the alleged attack. Police described him as another resident of the apartment complex.
The unusual circumstances left little warning for the people inside the apartment. Martin noted in comments to local media that families commonly think about doors and other typical entry points when discussing home safety, not someone breaking through the wall of a closet connecting neighboring units.
Authorities have not publicly released a detailed account of how Reyes allegedly broke through the wall before entering the apartment. Police also have not provided a detailed public update on the teenager’s medical condition. Parrish said she faces a lengthy recovery after the traumatic encounter.
Reyes was booked into the Hall County Jail after his arrest. The charges are allegations, and the available reports did not identify a scheduled court appearance or provide information about a plea as of Friday.
