NEW YORK — The NYPD on Friday asked for help identifying two men wanted after a machete attack and attempted robbery that injured two riders about 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the West Farms Square–East Tremont Avenue station in the Bronx, officials said.
Police said the investigation reached a new phase with the release of surveillance images that capture one suspect near the station and a vehicle believed to be tied to the case. Detectives have interviewed witnesses and reviewed camera angles in and around the station since the attack. The men ran off before officers arrived, and no arrests had been announced by late Friday. Both victims were taken to a nearby hospital and were in stable condition, authorities said.
According to preliminary accounts, the encounter began when one suspect confronted two men on or near the platform with the remark, “What are you looking at?” The dispute escalated as a suspect pulled a machete and slashed a 44-year-old man in the wrist and legs, police said. A second suspect punched a 32-year-old man and tried to grab his phone during the chaos. Riders reported a brief scramble at the turnstiles as the suspects fled toward the street. “It happened fast—people scattered,” said a commuter who arrived just after the attack.
Authorities said the machete has not been recovered and that the station’s camera network, along with exterior business systems, may yield additional footage. Investigators are analyzing the newly released clips for clearer images of faces, clothing and license plate details. The motive remains an attempted robbery connected to the struggle over a cellphone, police said. The victims’ names were not released, and officials said they are still confirming whether the men knew their attackers.
The West Farms Square–East Tremont Avenue hub serves the 2 and 5 lines and connects to several bus routes along East Tremont Avenue and Boston Road. The late-afternoon timing placed the incident in a period of steady weekend traffic. Recent city data show transit incidents involving knives and blades draw rapid responses, including added patrols and targeted outreach to businesses with cameras near station exits. Residents said they noticed more officers at the stairways and mezzanine in the days after the slashing.
Transit detectives plan additional canvasses for witnesses through the weekend and expect to coordinate with Bronx prosecutors once the suspects are identified, officials said. If arrests follow, charges could include robbery, assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Police said they will issue another update when they verify any leads from the images made public Friday and when laboratory analysis of clothing or recovered items is complete.
On Friday evening, investigators said the search continued and that tips were being reviewed. The next update is expected after detectives verify potential identifications from the surveillance images released earlier in the day.
