Four teenage suspects are jailed in Johnson County as investigators sort out roles and motive.
BURLESON, Texas — Four teens have been arrested in the killing of 17-year-old Keighan Robert Crist after gunfire erupted late Sunday in the parking lot at Bailey Lake, authorities said. Another 17-year-old was shot in the leg and treated at a hospital.
Detectives say the encounter started as a narcotics transaction and ended with multiple shots fired into a car just before midnight. Officers found Crist behind the wheel with life-threatening wounds. He was pronounced dead at a hospital at about 2:12 a.m. Monday. The arrests, announced Friday, cap an intensive weeklong search that began with one suspect detained within hours and continued with three more teens booked on homicide- and robbery-related counts. The case is moving into the charging phase, with prosecutors reviewing statements, physical evidence and digital records to decide how to proceed.
Investigators said they were called around 11:30 p.m. to the lakeside parking area, where the two wounded teens were found. After interviewing the surviving teen, detectives concluded the shooting followed a planned meetup among teenagers for a drug sale. Officers quickly identified a 17-year-old suspect and located him inside a vehicle parked in a Burleson driveway. The teen gave a statement admitting involvement, according to police. In a public message offering condolences, the department said such violence “does not reflect who we are as a city.”
Police listed four suspects held at the Johnson County Jail. Wyatt Lynn Jacobs, 17, of Burleson, faces capital murder with robbery and aggravated robbery, with bond set at $1.2 million. Joel Fabian Garcia, of Fort Worth, and Julio Adan Duarte, of Burleson, are charged with murder and aggravated robbery; each has a $1.25 million bond. Gustavo Gil Jr., of Alvarado, was arrested Thursday and is charged with engaging in organized criminal activity; as of Friday, his bond had not been posted. Authorities have not said who fired the shots, how many guns were present or who brought them to the park. They have not released information on ballistics or any surveillance footage.
Bailey Lake is a family park with a trail, playground and fishing spots near neighborhoods and schools south of Fort Worth. The late-night timing suggests few bystanders were nearby. Earlier in the week, the medical examiner confirmed Crist’s identity and death time, and police detailed the parking-lot location of the shooting. The scene, a short drive from City Hall, has been the focus of increased patrols since the incident. City officials have not announced changes to park hours or posted new restrictions, and police have not indicated that additional suspects are sought.
All four teens are expected to make initial court appearances soon in Johnson County. Prosecutors will decide whether to seek indictments for capital murder, murder, aggravated robbery and organized criminal activity. Scheduling information for hearings was not immediately available Friday. Detectives said the investigation remains active, with more interviews and evidence analysis to come. Additional public updates are expected when charging documents are filed and court dates are set.
By week’s end, the park was quiet, with routine patrols cruising past the entrance. Police praised “swift, aggressive, and exceptional work” by detectives in a statement that also extended sympathy to the families. Officials did not release details about the firearm or firearms used, whether any weapon was recovered, or whether social media or text messages arranged the meeting that preceded the shooting.
As of Friday evening, all four suspects remained in the Johnson County Jail while detectives continued their review. The next expected milestone is the scheduling of first appearances and the release of charging paperwork by the clerk’s office.
