PATERSON, NJ — A local man, Darian Jackson Jr., 25, was charged with aggravated assault following an early Sunday morning incident involving two firefighters who were responding to his medical distress call. Authorities reported the incident occurred between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m. in the 100 block of 16th Avenue.
Responding to a call for a man experiencing trouble breathing, Jackson was initially assisted by the firefighters, who also serve as emergency medical technicians (EMTs). They attempted to transport him for medical care before he abruptly requested to be removed from the gurney.
Police said that after being taken off the gurney, Jackson assaulted the two EMTs, striking one multiple times and kneeing the other before fleeing the scene. The EMTs sustained minor injuries from the altercation and received treatment at St. Joseph’s Medical Center.
Following an investigation into the assault, Paterson police apprehended Jackson on Wednesday and formally charged him with two counts of aggravated assault. Patrick Murray, the Officer-in-Charge of the Paterson Police, condemned the attack, emphasizing the duty of firefighters to aid those in need and deploring the violence encountered during their service.
“These professionals are committed to saving lives and ensuring safety, risking their well-being to assist others. It’s reprehensible for them to be met with violence while performing their duties,” Murray stated.
Prosecution of the case has been undertaken by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, with Jackson potentially facing significant penalties if convicted. Each of the third-degree aggravated assault charges against him carries a potential three to five years in prison and a fine up to $15,000.
The assault raises questions about the risks faced by emergency responders, who routinely put themselves in harm’s way to assist the public. This incident underscores the potential dangers they encounter, sparking discussion among community leaders and citizens about the need for protective measures and possibly harsher penalties for assaults on public service workers.
Community reaction has been one of concern, with many calling for increased support and resources to safeguard those in service roles. This case not only highlights the physical risks but also adds to the ongoing discourse on how best to maintain a safe working environment for emergency responders amidst increasing incidents of violence.
Legal proceedings are ongoing, and the information regarding Jackson’s legal representation was not immediately available. As the judicial process continues, both the community and local officials remain vigilant and supportive of the injured EMTs as they recover from the ordeal.
