Paterson, NJ — An early morning call for medical assistance in Paterson turned violent on March 2, when two emergency medical technicians were assaulted while attempting to aid a patient. Authorities have since apprehended a suspect who now faces serious charges linked to the attack.
The incident occurred just before sunrise at a residence on 16th Avenue, disrupting what began as a routine response for the Paterson Fire Department’s EMTs sent to help an individual experiencing respiratory distress. Police were called to the scene around 5:25 a.m., following reports of the assault.
Officials reported that upon arrival, the two EMTs were ambushed by the patient they were trying to help. Initially, the patient was secured on a gurney; however, shortly after requesting to be removed, he launched a sudden, violent assault against the first responders.
During this unexpected attack, one of the EMTs was repeatedly punched, while the other sustained injuries from being kneed, prompting an immediate police response and subsequent medical treatment for both at St. Joseph’s Medical Center.
In the wake of the attack, the local authorities acted swiftly. The Paterson Police Major Crimes Unit launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of 25-year-old Darian Jackson, Jr., a Paterson resident, on March 5. Jackson faces two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree crime in New Jersey, with penalties that could include three to five years in prison and fines up to $15,000.
“This type of violence against public servants is entirely unacceptable,” stated Patrick Murray, the officer in charge at the scene. “These dedicated firefighters were fulfilling their pledge to aid those in utmost need and were met with unprovoked violence for their efforts.”
The broader implications of such assaults are alarming, given the potential deterrent effect on emergency responders. Instances like these can escalate the risks associated with first response duties and may affect the promptness and efficacy of medical and emergency services, broadly impacting public safety and confidence.
Efforts to understand the motive behind the attack and prevent future incidents are ongoing. Local law enforcement continues to delve deeper into this particular case, urging anyone with more information to come forward to assist in their investigation.
The community and local officials have rallied to show support for the assaulted EMTs and the fire department, reinforcing the message that the safety of first responders is paramount. Meanwhile, as the judicial process unfolds, the incident prompts a citywide reflection on the hazards faced by those on the front lines of emergency care.
