THE ACREAGE, Fla. — Palms West Hospital is set to bolster its security by deploying an armed sheriff’s deputy within its premises starting April 1. The hospital decided to enhance its safety protocols following two violent occurrences involving patients under the Baker Act, including an alarming incident where a nurse faced severe assault.
Initially, the deputy will be present on an overtime basis, but efforts are underway to establish a full-time position dedicated to hospital security, according to sources familiar with the situation. This decision was spurred by the recent altercations, underscoring an urgent need for a more formidable law enforcement presence at the facility.
Sheriff Ric Bradshaw of Palm Beach County explained that the role of a deputy extends beyond passive surveillance. Having a stationed deputy ensures immediate availability for rapid response, critical in emergency situations where time is of the essence. Bradshaw clarified, “It’s not just about having a workstation; actual presence is key.”
A strategic meeting between police command staff and hospital administration resulted in the formalization of the enhanced security agreement. Bradshaw described the arrangement as a permit job, “wherein the deputy is stationed at the hospital during peak times, which are determined by the hospital administration.”
Despite a review by regulatory agencies that did not find faults with existing security protocols, the hospital, operated by HCA Healthcare, acknowledged the need for additional precautions. Louis Lochte, HCA Healthcare’s Regional Media Director, commented, “In addition to the full-time deputy starting April 1, the deputy will also be integral in training our staff, thereby expanding their role beyond just maintaining security.”
The presence of a full-time deputy is anticipated to not only deter potential threats but also provide staff and patients with a sense of security, enabling a swifter coordination with additional law enforcement if needed. “This guarantees immediate assistance is at hand should any security issues arise anywhere from the ER to any floor within the hospital,” added Bradshaw.
Palms West Hospital currently employs unarmed security personnel provided by Allied Universal Security Services. These guards will continue to operate alongside the new, armed deputy, ensuring a comprehensive approach to safety.
Hospital officials are in the final stages of appointing the full-time sheriff’s deputy, reflecting their commitment to safeguarding both the welfare of their medical staff and their patients. This measure aims at creating a safer healthcare environment, responding effectively to any potential threats that may arise within such settings.
