AMHERST TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A tragic domestic incident in Lorain County claimed the lives of a mother and her nine-year-old son in what investigators believe was a murder-suicide at their home on Broadway Avenue. Authorities discovered their bodies early Wednesday morning, shortly before 8 a.m., following a distress signal about smoke detected in the residence.
Lorain County authorities were alerted to the situation by the family’s alarm company, which reported signs of smoke emanating from the home. Upon arrival, first responders managed to quickly extinguish a minor fire and soon after found the bodies of Risa Louks, 46, and her son, Alex, inside one of the bedrooms.
Captain Robert Vansant of the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the preliminary investigation suggests that Louks shot her son before setting a fire and ultimately turning the gun on herself. Both were declared deceased at the scene by emergency personnel.
This heartbreaking event unfolded just as the father of the child, who had been residing out of state, had received approval for an emergency custody hearing set for late November in Henry County, Indiana. This legal action followed the couple’s finalized divorce in October 2019.
